Build trust on their career growth

Everyone wants to be successful in their career. Most of us want to quickly reach the top in the career. So understand the aspirations of your team members and set their goals that will help them to grow in their career along with their daily productivity.Team members should believe that the work they are doing everyday will help them to gather experience for their future career.

What will you do if there are tasks that are of no value for an individual but for the management on profit aspects?
Managers should support the management for profit aspects and can't always stick towards the team benefit. But still there is a way to handle this problem. Try assignments on rotation basis. Assign such tasks to employees on a short period and provide opportunities for them to work on latest technologies then and there.

Involve the team on POC (Proof of Concept)  and R&D (Research & Development) activities whether it is relevant to project or not, simply involve them. Try to explain your team on the benefits that they will get upon working on it. It is not always necessary to share the business values to the team. But they should understand the career value of working in a project which will boost their interest to deliver it on time and to see it go live.

Employees who believe that the project is worth to work beyond the salary and other benefits will give their maximum efficiency on the project.

Apart from the projects in which they work, it is your responsibility to plan for their career growth along with them. Set career goals for your team after one-to-one discussion with them and help to achieve it. Do periodical review and keep them on track.

This technique will help you to identify the right candidate to have a long term career with you.

Freedom and Equal Respect

Freshers will definitely expect the freedom in their work environment to work, learn, discuss, collaborate, implement and express their thoughts. The management can't expect the team to behave the way they behaved to their boss few decades ago. The boss should score his respect with the team by proving their skills and ability to handle or help the team by means of supporting their growth and improvement.

Managers should learn to give freedom and equal respect to the team members. At the same time it is their responsibility to make them understand on the importance of finishing the work on time.

It is not difficult for them to understand and take responsibilities because they are bold and energetic unless a boss suppress it. Encourage them to act freely, monitor their decisions just to have an alternate plan if something goes wrong, believe their ability and be available when they need your help.

Will you postpone a meeting or discussions called by your Boss? 99% of you will answer 'NO'. Because we were not treated and practiced the way to neglect or get another schedule when we were busy in other works. This generation is different and don't expect the same response you gave to your boss.

Respect their working hours and commitments. Don't demand them to deviate from their work for an unscheduled meeting unless it is very urgent.

Treat them equally like others while giving an appointment for your team member to meet you. Be simple to them and never show that you are their boss. Your team know you and there is no need to label.

Art of managing young team

With the experience I have gained all these days working with different experience level of team, I am amazed the way the young team of freshers are learning and working together. They are sharp minded with fresh ideas and attitudes to contribute towards the development of product.

Managing such team is entirely different. One should come out of their traditional and factory model of managing the team to be successful and to get the deliveries on time. At the same time keeping the team happy is the challenge.

There are lot of ways to handle a team of young people. They deserve self-respect, flexible working hours, opportunities to learn, possibilities to prove and demonstrate their ideas and most importantly, have trust on their ability.

There are few key points that managers should keep in their mind to be successful in managing a young team.

  • Freedom and equal respect
  • Build trust on their career growth
  • Mentor
  • Provide opportunities
  • Keep the environment active
  • Spend time with team
  • Understand their needs
  • Appreciate their contribution
  • Help to solve their official problems
  • Resolve conflicts
  • Identify leadership
  • Treat them equally
  • Be transparent on work activities
  • Identify their strength and weakness
  • Protect them from other influence
  • Monitor the office politics

I will write in detail on each topic in the next coming days.
